Success Isn't Smooth: Why the Bumps Build Better Coaches

April 07, 20254 min read

let's talk about something real.

Do you ever feel that subtle (or maybe not-so-subtle) pressure? The pressure that suggests a truly successful coaching business, or a successful life, means reaching some mythical "easy street" where challenges magically disappear? We scroll through feeds, see the highlight reels, the big wins, the breakthroughs, and it's easy to think that's the destination – a place free from struggle.

But we often hide the messy middle, don't we?

The confusing client situations, the marketing strategies that flop, the moments of self-doubt. Today, we're flipping the script. We're diving deep into what success actually looks like for us as coaches and for the clients we serve.

It’s not a destination without problems, but the powerful, ongoing process of navigating them. Let's redefine success and find energy in the entire journey.

Forget Calm Seas: Success is Learning to Navigate the Storms

Let's get one thing straight: problems, challenges, and setbacks aren't signs you're off track.

They are the track!

Think back to your most significant moments of growth, either personally or professionally. Did they happen when everything was smooth sailing, or when you faced something unexpected, had to push through discomfort, or make a difficult pivot?

Success isn't about the absence of trials; it’s about the presence of resilience during trials. We wouldn't admire a ship captain who only ever sailed in calm waters. We admire the one who has the skill, composure, and knowledge to navigate fierce storms.

Too many coaches (and consequently, their clients) hit an obstacle and immediately think, "I must be doing something wrong," or "Maybe I'm not cut out for this." We need to fundamentally shift that narrative. These moments aren't failures; they are forge fires building strength.

The Power Trio for Real Progress: Plan, Pivot, Progress

Okay, so challenges are normal, even essential. But that doesn't mean we just sit back and wait for them passively. Real, sustainable success is proactive and adaptable. It often involves what I call the "Power Trio":

  1. Plan: It starts with having a direction, a strategy, a vision. Knowing where you're generally heading provides stability and focus. This is your foundational map.

  2. Pivot: BUT... here's where the real magic happens. Your plan will meet reality, and reality often throws curveballs. Challenges will arise. Clients will bring unexpected issues. Market trends will shift. Success lies in your ability to adjust, adapt, and pivot without losing sight of your ultimate goal. This isn't failure; it's intelligent navigation. It's adjusting the sails, not abandoning the ship.

  3. Progress (Learn & Grow): Every single challenge, every necessary pivot, is rich with data. It's invaluable feedback. What did you learn from that situation? What new skill did you just develop (even if painfully)? Where did your assumptions need refining? This is where the gold lies. True progress isn't just moving forward; it's understanding that learning through the unexpected is moving forward. Ironically, this cycle of planning, pivoting, and learning is how things actually become more efficient and feel simpler over time – not by avoiding issues, but by getting exponentially better at handling them.

Embrace the Full Spectrum: The Power of the Entire Journey

This brings us to a crucial mindset shift. Success isn't just the celebratory moment you reach the mountaintop; it's the entire climb. Your coaching journey, just like life, will have a full spectrum of experiences:

  • Amazing Days: When everything clicks, clients have breakthroughs, and you feel totally aligned.

  • Challenging Days: When things feel hard, progress seems slow, and your resilience is tested.

  • Confusing Days: When the path forward isn't clear, you're weighing options, or feeling uncertain.

  • "Shake-it-Up" Days: When you feel stagnant and know something needs to change.

  • Growth Days: (Which often look like challenging or confusing days in disguise!)

Embracing the entire journey means accepting all of these days as valid, necessary parts of the process. It's not about plastering on a fake smile or forcing toxic positivity. It's about finding power in the reality of your experience. When you stop resisting the hard days and instead approach them with curiosity – asking, "What's here for me to learn?" or "Okay, how can I best navigate this?" – you unlock incredible energy and resourcefulness. Shifting from "It should be easy" to "I can handle whatever comes" is transformative.

Ignite Your Action: Coach the Real Journey

So, how do we take this redefined view of success and put it into action?

  • Look Inward: This week, identify one recent challenge you faced. Instead of dwelling on the difficulty, consciously reframe it. Ask yourself: What did I learn? How did I adapt or pivot? Acknowledge the strength and learning in that experience as a success.

  • Look Outward (To Your Clients): How can you bring this conversation into your coaching? Help your clients normalize their own struggles. Guide them to see the power in their pivots, the lessons in their setbacks, and the strength they build by navigating the messy middle.

You became a coach to make a real impact. Modeling and teaching this realistic, resilient, and ultimately more empowering view of success is one of the most profound ways you can serve. Embrace your full journey, coach the real journey, and watch the transformations unfold.
