Rethink Your Goals: Why 'Impossible' is the New 'Realistic'
Lately, I've been giving a lot of thought to goal setting, and what I've learned has significantly shifted my perspective.
It goes like this: when our goals are just, well, mediocre, it feels like we have endless options. We see a million different paths, and it's easy to get lost. But here's the thing – in today's world, that's not always a good thing.
What happens when you truly aim for the near impossible? Something really interesting occurs: all those "normal pathways" just disappear. Suddenly, you're forced into a whole new game. And this, surprisingly, is what gives you laser-sharp focus.
Think about it. If you're spread too thin with your efforts on building relationships, maybe dabbling in multiple paths and strategies all at once, you likely won't truly master any of those connections. You're constantly scattering your energy.
I'm finding that the true essence of good strategy is actually what you choose not to do. It's about letting go of the ordinary to pursue the extraordinary.
The hard truth? In today's fast-paced world, setting "realistic" goals can actually hurt you. You end up swimming in minutia, constantly feeling like you need to tackle every single idea that comes your way. It just doesn't work.
If you really want to see things happen – if you want to unlock growth you've never dreamed about – you need to make the normal pathways disappear. This forces you to focus intently, allowing you to master the extraordinary.
This is something I'm personally working on, and it's a huge part of what we're helping our BCM coaches learn: how to set what feels like truly extraordinary goals, precisely so they can achieve levels they've never even dreamed about.
